St. Patrick’s Day – What’s This Celebration About? ☘️

📅 On March 17, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Ireland’s national holiday, honouring its patron saint – St. Patrick. According to legend, he brought Christianity to the Emerald Isle and drove all the snakes away.
Today, it’s one of the most widely recognized celebrations in the world! On this day, people dress in green, wear shamrocks (a symbol of luck), and take part in parades. In Ireland and countries with large Irish communities (such as the USA, Canada, and Australia), festivals are organized, and some rivers, like the one in Chicago, are even dyed green!
It’s also a great opportunity to get familiar with Irish English and learn some phrases commonly used by the Irish!
✅ Grand – In Ireland, this doesn’t mean “big” but rather “okay” or “all good” (e.g., It’s grand! = “It’s fine!”).
✅ What’s the craic? – A popular way to say “What’s up?” or “How’s it going?”
✅ Eejit – An Irish way of calling someone a fool (often in a humorous way).
✅ Ye – In Irish English, “ye” simply means “you all” (e.g., Where are ye going?).
✅ Deadly – Surprisingly, this doesn’t mean “lethal” but rather “awesome” or “great” (e.g., That’s a deadly idea!).
💚 We encourage you to celebrate this special day – preferably with Couch English! 💚
